FRPS distinction statement of intent:
One Man, Every Man
James Forrester, my grandfather’s brother, loved and was loved by our family.
He volunteered in Glasgow for the Highland Light Infantry at the outbreak of war in 1914. He fought his way through three years of trench warfare on the western front and died at the village of Tilloy during the Arras offensive on April 24th 1917.
This panel portrays aspects of his war, his death and his memorial. Personal, yet common to so many families throughout Europe and beyond.
I used platinum/palladium prints for this work.
My reason for this was the fine tonality of the process fitting the subject and for the archival properties. There is also a poignancy in the use of platinum/palladium as this process, commonly used prior to WW1, ceased almost immediately on the outbreak of war as both metals were needed in the manufacture of munitions.
